As you know my morning walk with Rosie pug is an essential start to my day. There is a nature reserve opposite my home and a stroll through it on a misty morning is truly magical.
That’s where the inspiration came for the Black Garden print for the upcoming Resort/ Pre Spring collection.
I wanted to create an imaginary, magical garden print using some of the plants, flowers and birds from that morning walk. I loved the idea of a nineteenth century, pioneering female explorer discovering this garden, so they have a botanical feel in the way they are drawn. The clothing took on some styling details from the nineteenth century too. I love a theme!
I am a big fan of Chris Ofili’s paintings, and a recent exhibition of his in New York inspired the way I filled some of the shapes with areas of flat patterns, marks and dots.
